Field Hockey at Summer Olympics 2012

Field Hockey is an interesting sport at Summer Olympics 2012.  This sport has a long Olympic history.  The first men’s Olympic field Hockey competition was held in 1908 at the London Olympic Games.  The first women’s Field Hockey competition added to the Olympic program in 1980 at the Moscow Olympic Games.  Usually Olympic Field Hockey is playing on a green pitch, but for the first time in history the Summer Olympics 2012 Field Hockey is playing on a blue pitch.

When: From July 29, 2012 to August 11, 2012

Number of medal events: Two medal events (One men’s event and one women’s event)

Number of teams: Twelve men’s teams and twelve women’s teams.  (Total 24 teams)

Number of athletes: 192 men and 192 women (Total 384 athletes).  Each team consists of 16 athletes (11 players on the field and 5 substitutes).

Venue: Brand-new Riverbank Arena, London

At the Summer Olympics 2012, twelve men’s and twelve women’s Field Hockey teams divide into 2 groups (Pool A and Pool B), so there are six men’s and six women’s teams in each pool. The preliminary competitions begin with round-robin play, so each team will play against the other teams within its pool.  In other words, each team will play 5 games during the preliminaries.
